THE PROBLEM WITH DISCRIMINATION

Issues: Causes

RACISM

Our country was built on the value that everyone, regardless of race, ought to be treated equally. Simply put, affirmative action programs based on race do not treat everyone equally. Thus, it is antithetical to the values our nation was built on.

ECONOMICS

When we choose people to become our future leaders based on race, not only are we being unjust, but we are bringing in workers who aren't as capable as those who are chosen on merit. That means less productivity, and less output, hurting our economy and our nation.

STEREOTYPES

Racial Discrimination hurts even those it claims to help! By claiming that certain groups need help to become successful, they are stereotyped as victims and as poor, continuing the cycle of discrimination even further.

OUR SOLUTIONS

Pushing for an Equality Bill alone won't solve the problems we face. For that, we need to implement certain solutions to ensure that everyone truly does have an equal shot in life without being discriminated against for their race.

CLASS-BASED AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

Often times, race-based affirmative action is based on the stereotype that certain races are poorer than others when in reality, there are people across racial groups who don't have access to as many opportunities. Class-based affirmative action takes these hardships into account so that we can help all people, regardless of their race.

TRANSPARENCY

Till Edward Blum fought a case against Harvard, many of us didn't know how pervasive the problem of discrimination in college admissions was. Without data, no one can make a solid approach to any problem, and so we must unite to force colleges to be more transparent about their admissions process.

SOLVING THE PROBLEM AT THE ROOT

Often times, we try to solve the problem of inequality very late in life: during college, and even during employment. Why not try and solve these problems when they begin, during school? We ought to explore solutions to bridge inequality in schools rather than focusing on colleges so that we can reach more people when we can make the greatest impact.
